Bullying... Now Punishable by Law?

Several teens in the Massachusetts area have been charged with bullying after a 15 year old girl committed suicide.
According to the teen's parents and others at the school, the girl was bullied by classmates after starting a relationship with the captain of the football team (who has now been charged with bullying and statutory rape).
I've dealt with a bully or two in my day, but this seems to be bullying of the next generation. Teens have taken to the internet as a new form of harassment. Kids are even being picked on in the safety of their own homes via myspace, twitter, and facebook.
If you ask me, it seems a little over the top to send kids to jail over this. They should be punished... but should making fun of someone in high school ruin the rest of your life?
Parents need to start paying better attention to what teens are doing, and myspace, facebook and twitter should have age requirements. When I came to college, you had to have a college e-mail address before you could have a facebook account. Why did that change?
Teens obviously aren't responsible enough to have a web page that is seen by so many people- and aside from the bullying aspect, they are also notorious for putting too much information out there for potential predators to see.
I think teens should be held responsible for their actions, but so should parents. Not knowing what your teen is doing while they are on-line is dangerous- and could have increasingly serious consequences.
What is Really in the Health care Bill?

Like many people, when I heard that the new health care bill was going to pass, I was confused. What was I confused about?... EVERYTHING.
What is in this thing? Where are we getting the money to pay for the 1,000+ pages of stuff we're changing? How does the bill directly affect me?
These are all questions that I can't seem to find a sufficient answer to, and it's worrisome. With an economy that is floundering, a job market that isn't hiring, and a country in a massive amount of debt, I wonder about this bill and what it means for the average person.
I'm still waiting for the answers... hopefully they won't come too late.
Once a Cheater Always a Cheater?

As Tiger-mania was seeming to take a back seat to bigger news, more allegations have surfaced about the golf star. These allegations include accusing Tiger of using HGH to enhance his golf game... and the evidence is mounting.
Even though Tiger has denied allegations of illegal drug use, why should people believe him? He lied to his wife, his family, and his many mistresses about his countless affairs- what would keep him from lying again?
I say once a cheater always a cheater... if Tiger would cheat on his wife for his own selfish desires I don't see any reason why he would hold back from cheating on golf. Shame on you Tiger Woods, again.

Prius Still Causing Accidents... What Will it Take to Get These Things off the Road??

I really don't understand why people are still driving these things, BUT... if you are one of the people that hasn't taken sticking brakes and countless wrecks as a sign that you should get a safer car, then you might want to check out this video.... How to stop a runaway car.

The Protest against budget cuts for the University was held this morning, and was VERY poorly attended. Like most students, I had class this morning and interviews before my class, keeping me from showing my support. I think that to make a difference faculty and staff need to become more involved in the process- cancel classes during these protests and encourage students to participate. If we don't show up, how do we expect to change anything?

Pickle Pops... Really?

Yes, you read the headline correctly... you can now expect pickle pops at a grocery store near you. Thanks to pickle lovers like Snookie of MTV's Jersey Shore, the pickle has a new form- popcicles.
The tangy popcicles were even featured on Food Network! Check out the video.
I won't be trying these any time soon, but very interesting idea...
An Upsetting Season Finale

While Vienna may be flying high "on the wings of love", most of us are left wondering about Jake's decision to marry the controversial bachelorette.
During the finale I was piled on my couch with friends doing what I can only assume most women were doing- yelling at the t.v. Although there were many indications that Vienna would win Jake's heart, we all held on to a mere shred of hope that he would come to his senses and pick Tenley... who is best compared to a cartoon Disney princess due to her unfailing positive attitude and permanent smile.
In the end, Jake ignored warnings about Vienna's character from other women and his family claiming that he knew the real Vienna... He must know something we don't. I'm predicting a split in the near future, but I hope she gets to keep that ring!

American Idol kicked off its week at the Kodak Theatre with high hopes for the women in the top 24. After watching the women on Tuesday and the men last night, I have to say that I wouldn't be so quick to say that the women hold most of the talent in this group.
There are several indie sounding artists this time around in the women's group. While this sound is known for being an "original" sound, I thought that all of these girls sounded very similar- to the point where when it came time to vote, I was getting a few of them mixed up.
Watching the men last night I was pleasantly surprised. There are of course a few of them that let nerves take them over, but there were also a few that seemed like they were made for the stage.
Two people will go home next week and I will be glued to the t.v to find out who America decides to let go.

Tiger Woods Breaks Silence About Sex Scandals

Tiger woods is emerging from his alleged "sex rehab" to address his cheating ways. On Friday he will speak to a few pre-selected members of the press about his scandalous affairs that destroyed his family and career.
According to Fox News, Tiger is planning to return to golf soon, possibly the Masters tournament in April... but is it too soon? There are currently golf balls featuring his many mistresses for sale... I say stay in sex rehab.
I also think that as a respected and exclusive tournament, the Masters should not offer Tiger an invitation to play. Many kids will be watching the tournament which features athletes that they look up to and consider role models. What kind of message would be sent if this tournament allowed an adulterous liar to participate and possibly win?

Snow in The Boro

I am always confused by Georgia weather, and this weekend was no exception. After a dreary day of rain and cold temperatures I walk out to find my car covered in snow. I was shocked, but excited because I couldn't remember the last time I had seen snow. The weather was short-lived and beautiful while it lasted, but now I'm ready for some warm weather and pool parties. Let's hope the groundhog was wrong...

Bad Economy= Bad Super Bowl Commercials?

After much anticipation about my favorite part of the Super Bowl (the commercials) I found myself underwhelmed. I'm not sure what hapened this year, but like everything else I blame the economy for the commercial recession.
There also seemed to be a trend of nudity this year- and not the good kind. I'm not sure why so many commercials had half naked middle aged men as the focus of their ads... This Dockers Commercial left me scratching my head.
Some of my favorites were the always hysterical
e-trade baby, the Bud Light commercial featuring T-Pain, and the Hyundai commercial featuring Brett Favre.

As a senior I'm still amazed at the ways the University finds to squeeze money out of the already small pockets of students. Case and point- the Office of Parking and Transportation.
I think I can speak for a majority of the student population here at Georgia Southern when I say that this office has been my worst nightmare since I've been in school.
I've recently learned that if you recieve 5 or more tickets in a semester PAID or UNPAID, you are subject to be towed from campus. Seriously?
Check out the Parking and Transportation
website to see for yourself...

Toyota Recalls Prius... Finally.
Toyota has announced that they are recalling 437,000 Prius Hybrids around the world due to brake problems. I say it's about time they own up to their mess.

A Recall Because Brakes Don't Work?...Nah.
After numerous complaints of faulty brakes in Toyota's Prius, the company is refusing to recall the models in question. It seems to me that brakes are kind of important for the function of a car... maybe I'm confused, but the last time I checked, brakes were essential for stopping/ avoiding wrecks. This article by CNN explains this ludicrous situation.
